Why migrate?

Compared to IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server provides better security, developer productivity, manageability, and also delivers on its promise to lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Microsoft SQL Server provides out-of-the-box support for transparent data encryption, master data management, and self-service business intelligence. On the other hand, all these features are all expensive add-ons from IBM.

DB Best can provide you with a turnkey migration solution to Microsoft SQL Server.

Typical challenges that we see

Database migration is a daunting task with a lot of hidden issues and possible problems. With our extensive experience, we can overcome database migration challenges that you could face when you start to migrate IBM DB2 to SQL Server.

Post-Migration Database Capacity Validation

Prior to the migration, you should have a good understanding of your database workload including any key performance metrics and frequency of peak loads. The key to a proper comparison is a way to replay a workload. For example, you can do this through the SQL Server Distributed Replay feature or your own load harness.

Once under load, you can evaluate your new technology by monitoring pressure on CPU, Memory, IO Operations, and network traffic.

By monitoring when the system is under pressure you can determine if your technology is properly sized or if resources need to be adjusted.

DB Best can help you profile your existing environment and then grade your migration against that profile.

The leader in IBM DB2 to SQL Server migrations

The DB Best team developed a unique methodology for migrating IBM DB2 applications to Microsoft SQL Server. This technology has been tested and proven many times over with hundreds of different customers. Being an architect and the original creator of SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA), the DB Best team is THE database migration expert you can trust with your project.

Based on our vast migration experience, the DB Best team developed our in-house products Database Compare Suite and DB2 Migrator, which greatly complements SSMA for IBM DB2.

Here are the DB Best tools that we’ve developed to optimize the IBM DB2 to SQL Server migration process.

Getting started

Sometimes you need a helping hand to get you started. So, here are some of our offers to help with assessments, using SSMA, or developing a future-state roadmap.

Improve application performance with a move from DB2 to SQL Server

One of our customers supported a DB2-based reporting application. Their system included Java based web app and Informatica data management solution connected to DB2 databases. So, to provide a web interface for reporting needs they deployed a WebSphere server for hosting their Java application. With this interface, a small circle of users could create reports using data imported via Informatica.

Our customer wanted to reduce the maintenance costs and increase functionality. So, we came up with a solution to migrate IBM DB2 to SQL Server databases. Then we reconnected the application to the new database.

See how we migrated an application to the Microsoft SQL Server platform in the following video.
