DB Best is proud to introduce the trial version of Oracle Forms Converter. This application helps clients move away from legacy Oracle Forms and modernizes them to current web-based solutions.
Historical background on Oracle Forms modernization
Oracle introduced the first version of Forms over 30 years ago. Since then, Oracle Forms and Reports have become deeply embedded in many IT portfolios. Because of Forms and Reports’ tight integration with the Oracle database, it’s hard to replace them or find alternatives. However, the DB Best team has established a proven Oracle Forms and Reports modernization process. Considering the weakness of modernization options proposed by Oracle, DB Best developed a future-state architecture for Oracle Forms and Reports applications. This solution allows for running converted applications in a web browser and using your existing Oracle database as a data source.
DB Best is always pursuing new discoveries for automating routine processes. Known for expert proficiency in database migrations, the DB Best team created several automated products. Particularly, DB Best developed state-of-the-art database migration technology in 2002. Microsoft then acquired this technology to make it the foundation of the SQL Server Migration Assistant product line.
And when we first faced a complex Oracle Forms modernization project, we didn’t hesitate to start the development of a tool to automate this process. Considering the amount of legacy Oracle Forms currently in use, we understand that the demand for a proven modernization solution will be high.
We already used Oracle Forms Converter in several commercial projects (read more). Now, we have decided to release a trial version of this amazing product. Now, you can not only assess the complexity of your Oracle Forms modernization effort. With the trial version of Oracle Forms Converter, you can also feel the magic of this powerful technology. Watch the following video to see how this product works what you need to do to run it by yourself.
Limitations of the Oracle Forms Converter trial license
The trial version of Oracle Forms Converter works only during the first 14 days after installation. After the trial period expires, you will not be able to launch the conversion.
You can convert no more than 20 forms or modules in a single operation with the trial version of Oracle Forms Converter. However, Oracle Forms Converter does not limit the number of operations. You’re limited only by the length of the trial period.
Finally, the web applications converted by the trial version of the product include a special watermark. This isn’t a true limitation as the main goal of this converter is to prove that the conversion technology works fine with your Oracle Forms. Contact DB Best to learn how you can deploy your converted web applications without the watermark.
Installing the trial version of Oracle Forms Converter
You can request a trial version of Oracle Forms Converter from the official product web page. The DB Best team will provide you with the download link and your personal license key. In addition, please make sure that you have installed all the required drivers. And pay specific attention to the fact that Oracle Forms Converter requires a specific version of the ODAC driver (ODAC112040Xcopy_64bit.zip).
After you install the application and launch it for the first time, you will need to activate the application using your personal license key. After you add the license key, you will need to restart Oracle Forms Converter.
Typical conversion workflow
Oracle Forms Converter automates the complex code conversion process and allows for migrating to modern Web 2.0 architecture in a matter of weeks rather than months. However, the actual project duration depends on the complexity of your source Oracle Forms. You may want to assess the complexity with our free Oracle Forms Converter — Assessment Tool.
To quickly demonstrate the application capabilities, we recommend using a sample project. It comes as part of the installation pack and includes four Oracle Forms. You can convert these forms by the means of Oracle Forms Converter, deploy them, and then launch converted applications in the web browser.
To use these forms as an example, you need to execute the SQL scripts from the SQL folder. These scripts create all the required objects in your Oracle database to launch the sample Oracle Forms. Please make sure that you connect to your Oracle database with the SYSDBA system privilege.
Continue with creating a new project in Oracle Forms Converter. Specify the path to the folder, which includes the source files. This may be the folder of the sample project. Specify the connection credentials of the database, which interacts with your Oracle Forms. For the sample project, you need to connect to that database, which you used to run the scripts.
Now press the Convert button. After Oracle Forms Converter completes the conversion process, it displays the assessment report. You may use this report to estimate the complexity of your source Oracle Forms and to understand the amount of effort required to complete the modernization project.
After making all the required manual changes to the converted code, you need to deploy this new application. Oracle Forms Converter provides users with two deployment options. The first allows for saving all the converted code to files. This option (To Files) requires manual deployment. The second option (To Web Site) runs converted forms in the web browser.
Press the Publish button and switch to the To Web Site tab. Specify the start form of your application. For the forms from the sample project, please select the DEMO_START_FORM form.
You will need to create stored procedures for Web API and converted forms in your database to run the converted application. Be sure to check these options in the dialog box and specify the database connection credentials. This should be the same database where you ran the SQL scripts in the previous step.
The fully automated deployment process may take several minutes. After completing the deployment of these converted applications, you can access them at http://localhost:3000/. The following image compares the original Oracle Forms with the converted web application.
Oracle Forms Converter starts a web server and Web API to run these converted applications. So, when you’re done with the converted application, press the Stop Server button in Oracle Forms Converter to stop this web server and Web API.
