    DB Best can deliver migration projects end-to-end starting with migration complexity assessment through live deployment, or focus on certain phases of migration projects (for example, database schema conversion, modifying application source code to become compatible with SQL Server, converting Perl and shell scripts to run on SQL Server, creating data migration packages, etc.).

    1. Porting software products to support SQL Server.

    2. Packaged solutions for porting existing ISV customers to a new SQL Server version of their product. It usually includes creating a tool/script for moving data and possible business logic, and a technical migration guide.

    3. Delivering the service of migrating the existing ISV customers to the new SQL Server version. It many times involves performing software upgrades as well.

Migration offerings

  • DB Best migration offerings include conversion of Oracle, Sybase ASE, Sybase ASA, DB2, DB2 UDB, MySQL, Informix, Access applications and databases to SQL Server 2005/2008.

    Typical engagements are listed below, and can be customized based on specific customer scenarios.

    Migration complexity assessment — usually 2-5 days onsite + 5 days remote. Includes:

    • Database migration assessment – analyzing the existing database schemas by using Migration Analyzer module of SSMA – tables, indexes, triggers, stored procedures, functions, packages, sequences, views. coming up with precise estimates of the manual efforts of completing porting these objects to SQL Server after running SSMA.

    • Application conversion assessment – analyzing existing applications source code (e.g. Java, VB, PowerBuilder, C, etc,) by using SSMA and manually. Coming up with estimates for modifying embedded SQL statements to become compatible with SQL Server, or porting the code to another platform (e.g. to .Net).

    • Data migration assessment – estimating efforts to prepare SSIS or SSMA packages, and coming up with strategy for full, incremental, or replication types of data migration.

    • Assessment of integrating with 3rd party applications – reviewing all existing interfaces and "entry points" to the database, and coming up with estimates for making changes in these interfaces.

    • Assessment of testing, tuning, and deployment efforts.

  • Creating ROI analysis/migration business case — 1-3 weeks onsite/remote. Includes:

    • Reviewing current licensing, maintenance, support, hardware/software, and personnel costs.

    • Coming up with expected cost of running on SQL/Windows platform.

    • Coming up with expected cost of running on SQL/Windows platform.

    Delivering end-to-end migrations: Oracle-to-SQL Server 2008, Sybase-to-SQL Server, DB2-to-SQL Server, Informix-to-SQL Server, MySQL-to-SQL Server. Includes:

    • Database migration – converting schema and migrating data.

    • Application conversion – modifying applications to become SQL Server compatible, or rewriting applications on a different platform.

    • Testing, performance tuning, and benchmarking.

    • Deployment in production — after testing, validation and tuning is completed, deploying the new converted system in production environment.
