DB Best has helped to launch tens of iPhone applications. All of them are now found on iPhone App Store. This experience has taught certain lessons. If you observe these lessons when you launch a new iPhone app, you will increase your chance of success.
Many of the lessons that follow will seem glaringly self-evident. Yet company after company ignores these basic lessons. They almost always fail.
Make your iPhone app simple, but not too simple.
Overly complex apps tend to sink under their own weight. But if it is too simple, you will sacrifice features. Successful apps are simple but packed with customer benefit.
Give customer a reason to love it.
To succeed in the marketplace your concept can be two things: (1) something truly new or (2) a beneficial improvement on an existing concept. The concept cannot, however, recreate an existing application. i Surf connects surfers with more than 5,000 surf locations world-wide – something to love.
Look and feel gets you noticed.
Visual design for iPhone apps can represent 45–55% of development time. That is time well spent: the crisper the design, the more likely it will be popular. And structure the UI so normal people will quickly grasp what to do. Too many apps fail on both counts.
Think before you update.
It takes two or three days for a submitted app to be available for download at the iPhone App Store. Not knowing this, some people become update happy — wasting valuable time waiting for approval.
What features can you include?
Music and movies can be loaded and displayed successfully. That also goes for Web pages and images, as well as picture galleries and PDF documents. Also consider route mapping, clickable phone numbers, social networking, and payment options. iSkateboard with Google maps and GPS lets skaters find skate parks, shops, street spots.
Know the limitations.
Limits include interaction limits, storage size, and battery life. iPhones have neither a big screen nor a mouse or physical keyboard.
Client-server vs. stand-alone.
We have seen too many stand-alone iPhone apps crash and burn. Choose a client-server approach because it (1) consumes less CPU and memory and (2) is easier to update when new data is entered.
Amazing development model increases chances of success.
DB Best is now working with a fascinating iPhone development model. The model follows best practices learned over xx years. We can spot trouble early in the process and recommend fixes. We may also suggest features we know to work. And we know how to create true customer value.
